Melvin Champaign was my father. I was the first born. I miss him dearly. Even though we lived on different sides of the world we still stayed in touch. No matter what the day was never over til one of us called to say our love yous and a prayer to lay us down with. He listened to my problems, he always knew when there was something wrong with me!!!!
I love him lots!!!!!

I'm glad that you decided to do this and that you thought of the little things that are left in the station, like shoes.

Life is so fragile and then it goes on... and while some of us are stuck in a time wharp others keep moving. It is a moment like this, when someone notices that some one else is no longer here, that he left shoes, pictures and wallet at the station, that flips the switch so that those left behind can get unstuck from that frozen state of time when they could no longer move forward. Thank you for remembering.

Living out of state has not allowed me to connect with others in Charleston, SC, but your website provides an international touch that gives me the exposure to compassion that we needed.

When Melvin lived in Washington state, he was very much a part of non-profit work. I still meet people in the professional realm affected by him in wonderful ways. He & I met at a birthday party. He was an iron worker building the structure of the Convention Center in downtown Tacoma. He loved his children and he was ready to help people in need. He was so high energy, I couldn't figure out how he could work from 7am - 4pm as an iron worker, wash the dishes before dinner, and then help someone I knew move. But he radiated energy and he was eager to put his best foot forward. Thank you for your site.

Thank you so much for your love and compassion. I am writing on behalf of my son, Reuben Charity, Melvin's youngest son.

We would love to have future bulletins of your events. I just saw this today and am truly blessed. Melvin was a very athletic, lively compassionate person and he would have loved this idea of rememberance for them.

God bless you.

I must say that I am the proud wife of a firefighter!! You guys did such an awesome job and to see you in action was amazing. I knew as soon as Jim and I heard about this, it was something he would take to heart and want to be a part of. Although he did not inform me that he was going to try for the entire nine days until the day he left, I knew all along that he would be there the entire time pushing himself as hard as he could. That is just the kind of guy he is. (Sarcastic at times...many times...but the guy with the biggest heart I know!) I think it is great that Harry James was able to be a part of this and witness the camaraderie of the great "brotherhood" firefighters are always talking about and to see his father helping others. I am glad our own children saw this as well. It was a very heart wrenching experience the day the families were presented with the check and other gifts from the riders, I can only imagine how proud and sad at the same time the riders felt. You guys did a great thing and I am proud that my husband was a part it.
